History and Culture of Ladakh
From
mid 10th century, Ladhak was an independent kingdom, the ancestors of its rulers having
been the kings of old Tibet. The
kingdom of
Ladak attained
its greatest
geographical extent and glory in the early 17th century under the
famous king Singge Namgyal, whose empire extended across Spiti in
Himachal and western Tibet, beyond the revered sites of Mt Kailash
and Mansarovar. Later with its regional capital at Leh; Ladakh
became a part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Both the
land and the people of Ladakh
are quite different from those of the rest of India. The facial and
physical features of the Ladakhis, and their attire, match more to
those of Tibet
and Central Asia than of India. The original inhabitants may have
been Dards, an Indo-Aryan race down from the Indus and the Gilgit
area.
Buddhism reached Tibet from India originally through Ladakh.
Buddhism is the main religion followed in Leh Ladakh. A
village entrance normally has mani walls which are like a holy
boundary with stones carved with the Buddhist
holy mantras and marked by chortens or stupas.
The
main landmark of a village would be a monastery. Many are perched
high on hillsides and comprise of a number of temples with
awe-inspiring statues, thankas, wall paintings, prayer halls and
rooms where the priests or lamas stay.
Many of the monasteries in
Ladakh celebrate an annual festival. Masked Lamas clothed in
colourful robes enact various parts of the Buddhist religion through
dance-dramas. The largest and most popular festival is that of the
Hemis Monastery, 40 kms southeast of Leh. It is normally held in
June or July and is dedicated to Padmasambhava.
