Day 01:
Fly
into Leh; 3505 meters / 11567 feet.
Arrive at Leh Airport. Take the first whiff of this spectacular mountain city as you step out into 10000 feet plus terrain.

You are received
and welcomed by our local representative at the airport and transferred to hotel and you rest for acclimatization.
In the late afternoon,
you visit Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Namgyal Shemo Gompa and then stroll through Leh Bazaar.

This is a half day, 4 hour trip.

Leh, a historic town that served as the royal capital of the Old Kingdom. It is dominated by the nine-storey Leh Palace built in the 17th century in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture. However, it is now dilapidated .
Shanti Stupa: 3 km from Fort Road, Leh, it is a magnificent white-domed structure and located on the hilltop at Changspa.

Namgyal Tsemo Gompa:
Was founded around 1430 AD. It stands atop the crag behind Leh Palace and offers the most splendid visuals of Leh town. One of the most treasured possessions of the monastery is a three-story high solid gold idol of Maitrieya Buddha.

Day 02:

Today your Leh tour takes you for a full day Indus Valley monastery tour to get a flavour of the history and culture of Ladakh India.

With a visit to Thiksey, Shey and Hemis  you cover the best known monuments around Leh in this phase of your Leh package.
You also pass Sindhu Ghat by the Indus River.

Hemis Monastery, 40 km southeast of Leh, is the biggest and best-known 'Gompa' of Ladakh.  Hemis is also associated with the Hemis National Park, also the abode of the snow leopard, Tibetan kiang, ibex, serow, Tibetan antelope and avian fauna population found are the snow partridge and golden oriole.

Thiksey Gompa was built 600 years ago, consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside, 10 temples and a large Buddha statue.
Day 03:
Drive west of Leh to Alchi (3300 m / 10000 ft)., Ulleytokpo 68 kms one way from Leh.

After breakfast,
drive via Hall of Fame (which has a museum of the Kargil War memorabilia) and Magnetic Hill upto Lamayuru Monastery (the oldest in Ladakh) and the mesmerizing Moon or Lunar Landscapes. Lamayuru is 125 kms west of Leh at an altitude of 3510 m / 11600 feet

Then
drive back to reach Alchi / Ulleytokpo for the night.

Alchi is a small village in the Indus Valley, 67 kms west of Leh. Abandoned centuries ago the gompa or monastery is known as Chos-kor, or religious enclave and comprises of five temples. Its murals, dating from the 11th century, pre-date the Tibetan style of painting seen in all the other gompas of the region. Unlike other monasteries, Alchi is at ground level and is nestled in the shade of a garden.

Lamayuru Monastery has as the main image a large Vairocana (the Teaching Buddha) seated on a lion throne with a garuda (mythical bird) and sea monsters surrounding his head.
Day 04:

After breakfast explore Likir monastery and Basgo Castle.

Later drive back towards Leh enroute meeting the sangam of Zanskar and Indus rivers near Nimu. Stop here perhaps to enjoy lunch.

Return to Leh via Pathar Sahib Gurdwara, Spituk and Kali Mata Temple.

Likir Gompa is set on an isolated ridge. Numerous thankas hang from the columns and walls in the Assembly Hall. Lovely views from the terrace and interesting large statue of the Buddha in the open.

Sangam of Indus and Zanskar: Driving through a picturesque landscape one reaches the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar river 4 km from Nimmu village. The confluence is a magnificent view of the two rivers having different colours and force.
Day 05:

Drive north of Leh to Nubra Valley, 120 kms one way (5 hours).

Exciting experience at Khardung La, 39 kms from Leh.
(Mountain Pass at 5578 m / 18300 ft.). Here is supposed to be the highest motorable road in the world.

In Nubra Valley, visit Diskit monastery and white sand dunes in  Hunder and take a short camel safari on the double humped Bactrian Camels (extra cost).

The name Nubra Valley is applied to the region comprising the valley of the river Nubra and that of the Shayok, both above and below their confluence.

The route north of Leh crosses over Khardung-la. From the top, one can see all the way south over the Indus valley to the seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range, and north to the giants of the Saser massif.

 

Day 06:

In the morning explore Diskit monastery and the Maitreya Buddha and if interested the Samstanling Monastery in Sumur village and then drive back to Leh, passing Khardung La once again. Drop to hotel.

Later in the afternoon / evening take a walking tour for a shopping stint for curios in Leh Bazaar and perhaps checking out the evening Leh café’ life.

The name Nubra Valley is applied to the region comprising the valley of the river Nubra and that of the Shyok, both above and below their confluence.

he main village is Deskit has a 500 year old gompa situated on a rocky spur above the village with a commanding view. About 7 km from Diskit; Hunder is a pretty village, set among lots of trees and gurgling streams.
Day 07:  
After breakfast, drive east of Leh via Chang-la Mountain Pass (18,000 ft / 5,475 m) to Pangong Lake, (4267m / 14000 ft.), 145 kms / 5 hours one way.
The views all around Chang La are simply spectacular.

The area gets very windy by the evening and nights can be uncomfortable because of low oxygen at 14000+ feet.

Pangong Lake, is 6 to 7 kms (4.5 miles) at its widest point, and over 130 kms (80 miles) long.

Above Spangmik are the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Pangong range. It presents a spectacular view of the mountains, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake’s brackish waters.

Spangmik is the summer home of Chang-pa, the nomadic herdsmen of  Ladakh.
Day 08:  

Early risers can view the mesmerizing sunrise over Pangong Lake as the water sparkles as if with a million diamonds.

After breakfast, leave to drive back to Leh to reach by afternoon.
Rest through the rest of the day to prepare for another long drive tomorrow.

Marmots are large land squirrels and live in burrows. It is interesting to see them scurrying around and playing as they bask in the sun. You are likely to view them on your return in a large field as you return form Pangong. Your vehicle driver will know the exact place where these are found.

Day 09:

A long drive to Tso Moriri through spectacular landscapes and rough roads via Chumathang hot springs into Rupshu Valley - 240 kms, 8 hours.
Tsomiri, at 4595 m / 15165 feet, is the largest of the High Altitude Lakes to be situated entirely within India. It is 180 square kms in area and about 25 kms / 15 miles long and 7 kms / 4-5 miles wide.

Tso Moriri, Rupshu Valley:

Here, the Zanskar range is transformed into bare rolling many-hued hills, divided by open high-altitude valleys scoured by dust devils.

It is a landscape quite unlike any other in Ladakh or elsewhere in India. This area is now open for foreigners for visiting.

 
Day 10:

Explore Korzok monastery, nomad Chang-pa camp and the migratory birdlife.
 

Tsomoriri lake - Leh, 265 kms / 9 hrs.

Drive back to Leh via Tso Kar, Tanglang la (5359 m / 17700 feet).

Korzok
, situated at 15,000 ft (4,572 m) is the only permanent settlement in Rupshu.

In Rupshu the animal most likely to be spotted is the Kyang, the wild ass. The lakes are breeding grounds for numerous species of birds.
 Day 11: Check out from Leh hotel and transfer to airport to board the morning flight to New Delhi or onward destination,
 feeling blessed for the stolen moments spent in Ladakh
