Day 01:
|
|
Leh, a
historic town that served as the royal capital of the Old Kingdom, is
dominated by the nine-storey Leh palace built by King Singge Namgyal in the
17th century in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture,
which is said to have inspired the famous Potala in Lhasa built about
half a century later.
It rises from the edge of the town overlooking Leh. However, it is now
dilapidated and deserted. Shanti Stupa: 3 km from Fort Road, Leh, it is a magnificent white-domed structure and located on the hilltop at Changspa. |
|
Day 02:
|
|
Thiksey Gompa:
17 kms south-east of Leh, Thiksey gompa was built some 600 years ago and consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside. The gompa contains 10 temples; below the monastery itself are chapels and "houses" stretching down the hillside. A large Buddha statue, 15 meters tall was constructed in 1970 to commemorate a visit to Thiksey by the Dalai Lama. |
|
Day 03: After an early breakfast, drive 2 hours west of Ladakh upto Likir. Start trek, about 10kms / 5hrs, crossing Phobe la (3,700m) and Chagatse la (3,849mts.). At places, instead of taking the jeep track you can try the villager trails on the hillsides for shortcuts. Finally across the fields and stream reach Yangthang Village to your overnight camp. Overnight in Tented Camp. |

Likir Gompa
of
the 15th century is set on an isolated ridge. The
road
to
it
makes a wide semi-circle around its base,
affording beautiful views of the gompa.
Yangthang (3630m) is a village with a handful of people. They mostly farm and attend to livestock. |
|
Day 04:
Yangthang - Hemis Shukpachan (4 hrs trek). The gradients are gentler today. Ascend to Tsermangchen La (3750m) and then descend towards Hemis Shukpachan, the highest and most beautiful village in this route. Juniper trees (shukpa in Ladakhi) found in plenty here lend their name to the village. Silvery streams, the familiar willows, brown and green barley fields provide much needed color to the rugged and scraggy mountainscapes. Visit a family house in the village and have some butter tea and Ladakhi chang (the local beer). Overnight in Tented Camp. |
|
|
|
|
|
Sham valley has warm weather as compared to Indus valley and hence
conducive to thick vegetation and hence there are plenty of apricots,
apples and walnuts making it one of the richest valleys in Ladakh. Since
people are rich they have beautiful houses with wonderful interiors. |
|
Day 06:
Today you stay
at the fascinating Mongolian yurt cottages (made of bamboo and
canvas) of Ladakh Sarai Resort next to Ayu in Saboo village,
eight km east of Leh at an altitude of 3450 m. Experience the beautiful
and tranquil location with the Indus River flowing
below, facing the majestic Stok Kangri (6150m), offering an
incredible panoramic view of the Zanskar range. The yurts are located in
a beautiful grove of willow, poplar, apricot and apple trees. |
|
Khardung-la:
The
mountain pass (la means pass in Tibetan)
is the gateway to the Nubra Valley and used to lie on the ancient
caravan trade route to Central Asia. Ayu is renowned for its medicinal spring water, to which Ladakhis travel for healing. Close to the spring lies the village Gompa. Ayu also gives an introduction to a quaint Ladakhi village and an insight to their traditional culture, customs and cuisine. Don’t forget to taste Gur Gur or Yak Butter Tea. For those interested they can perhaps visit the Village Oracle as well! |
|
Day 07:
|
|
Pangong Lake,
is 6 to 7 kms (4.5 miles) at its widest point, and over 130 kms (80
miles) long and
is divided by the international border between India and China.
Pangong presents a spectacular view of the mountains, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake’s brackish waters. Spangmik along the lake's southern shore are the summer homes of a scanty population of Chang-pa, the nomadic herdsmen of southeast Ladakh. |
|
Day 08:
Check
out
from Leh hotel and transfer to airport to board
the
