Day 01:
|
|
Leh, a
historic town that served as the royal capital of the Old Kingdom, is
dominated by the nine-storey Leh palace built by King Singge Namgyal in the
17th century in the grand tradition of Tibetan architecture,
which is said to have inspired the famous Potala in Lhasa built about
half a century later.
It rises from the edge of the town overlooking Leh. However, it is now
dilapidated and deserted. |
|
Day 02:
Today take a jeep excursion to Spituk Monastery which also has a Kali
Mata Temple and huge prayer wheels. Overnight in Hotel Kaal / Ladakh Sarai at Leh. |
|
Spituk Gompa Spituk lies some 5 kms south of Leh. Spituk gompa was built about 550 years ago by Gyalpo Bumide, although one temple, dedicated to Mahakala was built about 900 years ago. Ancient thankas are preserved here, some having been taken from the Potala Palace and Lhasa after the Chinese invaded. |
|
Day 03:
|
|
Thiksey Gompa:
17 kms south-east of Leh, Thiksey gompa was built some 600 years ago and consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside. The gompa contains 10 temples; below the monastery itself are chapels and "houses" stretching down the hillside. A large Buddha statue, 15 meters tall was constructed in 1970 to commemorate a visit to Thiksey by the Dalai Lama. |
|
Day 04: After breakfast, drive west of Ladakh upto Likir. Visit Hall of Fame, Pathar Sahib Gurdwara, Magnetic Hill, Sangam Point (confluence of Indus and Zanskar Rivers) and Basgo Castle along the way.
65 kms, 4 hours. |
![]() The Magnetic Hill, West Ladakh |
Magnetic Hill:
Located 30 kms west of Leh it is believed that it has magnetic
properties, which attracts metallic objects and even moves heavy
vehicles up to a speed of 20 kmph while their engines are switched off!
Likir Gompa of the 15th century is set on an isolated ridge. The road to it makes a wide semi-circle around its base, affording beautiful views of the gompa.
|
|
Day 05:
Start
trek, about 5-6 hrs, crossing Phobe la (3,700m) and
Chagatse la (3,849mts.). At places,
instead of taking the jeep track you can try the villager trails on the
hillsides for shortcuts. Finally across the fields and stream reach
Yangthang Village to your overnight camp. |

Yangthang (3630m) is a village with a handful of people. They mostly farm and attend to livestock. |
|
Day 06:
Yangthang - Hemis Shukpachan (5-6 hrs trek). The gradients are gentler today. Ascend to Tsermangchen La (3750m) and then descend towards Hemis Shukpachan, the highest and most beautiful village in this route. Juniper trees (shukpa in Ladakhi) found in plenty here lend their name to the village. Silvery streams, the familiar willows, brown and green barley fields provide much needed color to the rugged and scraggy mountainscapes. Visit a family house in the village and have some butter tea and Ladakhi chang (the local beer). Overnight in Tented Camp. |
|
|
|
|
Sham valley has warm weather as compared to Indus valley and hence
conducive to thick vegetation and hence there are plenty of apricots,
apples and walnuts making it one of the richest valleys in Ladakh. Since
people are rich they have beautiful houses with wonderful interiors. |

via Alchi, 3 hrs. |
|

is a small village in the Indus Valley, 67 kms west of Leh. Abandoned
centuries ago the

is known as Chos-kor, or religious enclave and comprises of five
temples. Sangam of Indus and Zanskar: Driving through a picturesque landscape, about 30 kms west of Leh, one reaches the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar river 4 km from Nimmu village.
